Athena and Ila likeness

A likeness of Athena and Ila.

Athena was the daughter of Adama and Ila, and had two brothers, Apollo and Zac. All three joined the colonial military in the final years of the Thousand Yahren War, serving on Galactica, which Adama led with the rank of Commander. The Battle of Cimtar saw the loss of Zac, with a Cylon strike on the Twelve Colonies of Man taking away Ila and millions of others.[1]

Over the following days as an assembled refugee fleet made its departure towards Carillon, Athena slowly got over her feelings of hopelessness. Though having held romantic feelings towards a Viper pilot, Lt. Starbuck, and almost saw his death in a damaged Viper, she turned down his advances, feeling it to no longer be a worthwhile endeavour. This rejection would later lead to a love-triangle between herself and Cassiopeia, a civilian Starbuck met soon after.[1] Not long after the fleet's arrival at Carillon, it became clear Cylon forces were in pursuit. During the Battle of Carillon, Athena performed dual roles, reporting on the distance of enemy forces and communicating between the Viper wings.[1]
