A Battlestar Group (BSG) was a naval fleet consisting of a battlestar and its escorts, together defining the group. Battlestars rarely transferred to new groups, giving Battlestar Groups an historical prestige comparable to infantry units.[1]

- The idea of Battlestar Groups was conceived during production of the Miniseries, with the abbreviation simultaneously serving as a realistic military designation and a reference to the franchise itself. Some confusion during production of Season 1 would lead to props relating to Triton to be called "BST-39". Executive Producer Ron D. Moore would later clarify it did in fact mean Group, making "BST" an error.[1]
